Motivational Speeches To Get Your Day Going

The beginning of 2018 is especially important to the beginning of a new journey for a lot of people. Whether it be creating a “new years resolution” to lose weight, get a 3.5 GPA, or running a marathon, motivation is a key factor that will influence the amount of effort you put into making your resolution a success!

Now… how do people gain motivation nowadays? It could be music, setting goals, etc. BUT… one thing that really motivates me are motivational speeches. Why is that? For me, it is nice to get advice from a different perspective, while also gaining emotional encouragement from the rhetorical devices that the speakers use, such as ethos and pathos as major appeals (Yes, flashback to your high school/college English class).

I’ve generated a list of five motivational speeches that have truly changed my life in multiple facets. I hope that they impact you as much as they have in my life.

“The Last Lecture: Achieving Your Childhood Dreams” by Randy Pausch

This inspirational “lecture” delivered by Randy Pausch was performed months before his death to cancer. As a result, he speaks towards living your childhood dreams and achieving goals despite the obstacles put in one’s way. The constant motif of “brick walls” plays a major role in how certain obstacles in life will not take away from who you are as a person and what goals you can achieve.

J.K. Rowling: “The Fringe Benefits of Failure, and the Importance of Imagination”

In this Harvard commencement ceremony speech, J.K. Rowling explores how the topics of failing and utilizing one’s imagination can be imperative for the success and development of one’s life. Using your imagination to make the world a better place is essential to living a great life, and that is shown especially in her speech.

Steve Jobs: "How to Live Before You Die"

This is a popular one. If you haven’t seen this one, this is worth the 15 minutes. As humans, we want to fulfill our destinies granted to us at the beginning of our lives, therefore, we MUST LIVE! Steve Jobs plays on multiple motifs of love and loss, and doing what is right. He speaks mainly of love. It is important that people do what they love, or else they won’t be happy. LOVE WHAT YOU DO, and don’t settle for anything less - that is an essential theme of this powerful speech.

Charlie Day’s Merrimack College Commencement Speech

This one’s for all the college students out there! Day’s speech revolves especially around college degrees and how much in the end, they really don’t matter. Sure, you are specialized in a particular field now and you’re ready for the job hunt, however, your HARD WORK, EFFORT, and the STEPS YOU TAKE to succeed in life will (in the end) be the deciding factor of how successful you can be.

Why We All Need to Practice Emotional First Aid" by Guy Winch

This one’s a good one. This not only fits the message of the Runaway team, but shows the importance of emotional aid in our lives. Our body is our temple, therefore physical health is important. HOWEVER, our emotional health is VERY IMPORTANT as well. Practicing resting our brain, keeping our mind intact, and creating a good emotional state is important for a healthy body, mind, and soul. This speech, with scientific background and solutions to helping our mind prosper, will help you ring in the new year with a lot of POSITIVITY! I guess your brain is your temple as well…

I hope that these speeches have helped you in the ways that they have helped me. Have a blessed New Year and may 2018 be the best year for you all!
